The Nelson Harness Racing Club is facing one of its biggest challenges in its 125 year history after an accounting oversight has left the club in a desperate financial position facing a $140,000 tax bill.

The club should have been celebrating its 125th anniversary at its two-day summer meeting on Friday and Sunday. Instead, there was a sombre mood among club officials who will somehow have to find $140,000 to pay the Inland Revenue Department after over-claiming GST on stakes payments for the last four years.

Club president John McKenzie says he was devastated when he was informed about the accounting error in midOctober. The club had been claiming all the GST on stakes paid to winning owners and trainers instead of just those who are GST registered for the last four years, resulting in over-claiming by an

estimated $140,000. John says the club informed the IRD about the error “immediately” and although he has not yet had a response he expects to get a tax bill for the full amount. There is also a possibility that

Man saves girls off Rabbit Island Andrew Board

A Christchurch man is being hailed as a hero after saving two Nelson girls off Rabbit Island on Saturday afternoon. Wattie Mortimer, 42, was at Rabbit Island with his wife and two young daughters on the final day of their summer holiday when he heard the cry of help. Two Stoke girls, said to be aged 10 and 11 by members of the Nelson Coastguard, were onboard a $75 inflatable boat when strong winds and an outgoing tide took them away from their mother, who was sitting on the shore with a toddler. Wattie’s wife, Christine, said she asked the lady if she’d like her husband to go after them as they realised they could be in real trouble. Wattie was already in his wetsuit and was swimming in the surf with his daughters when he heard

The wind was just dragging us out and down the beach as well. So I said, ‘right, we’re staying here until someone comes and gets us.’” Wattie tied the surfboard to the inflatable and waited as they

In total, the inflatable drifted more than a kilometre and for 45 minutes before the Coastguard – which was on another rescue – arrived. “What a relief that was, a huge relief,” says Wattie. Coastguard says the girls were hypothermic and terrified when they got to them. “But they are going home to mum and dad tonight because of the actions that he [Wattie] has undertaken. He made our job so much easier because he kept them calm.” Nelson Harbourmaster Dave Duncan says Wattie is “absolutely a hero”, but was furious that the girls were out on the inflatable to begin with. “Kids going out in little inflatables that belong in swimming pools is criminally neglectful in my opinion. “However, they were there and they are extremely lucky that there were other caring adults on the beach because if they weren’t there, then it would be a very different result for those parents today.”

Wattie’s youngest daughter Caitlyn, 6, had no doubt about what she thought of her father’s actions. “You’re the greatest hero,” she told him. His reward? “Maybe after dinner you can go back to the beach, because you didn’t get much time there,” she suggested. As for the man himself, Wattie says he’s just thrilled it worked out. “Swimming out there, I was thinking that it’s always the guy that rescued them that drowns and that’s what was going through my mind. ‘Shit, I’m going to be the guy in the paper’. “I’m just glad everyone gets to go home to their families.” The Coastguard is made up of volunteers who give up their time to help save lives. Menzshed fire leaves founder ‘distraught’

Brittany Spencer The fire that destroyed the newly-created Menzshed at Omaio Village in Stoke has left founder Rex Lucas “distraught”. Rex could do nothing but stand there and watch as his tools and thousands of hours of work went up in flames, when the shed and caretaker’s area caught fire last Wednesday. “We nearly had a heart attack when we came back to see all the flames, firefighters and people outside the shed,” says Rex’s wife Pam. Fire units from Stoke and Nelson arrived on the scene around 3.30pm and had to rip open the fence amidst gas bottle explosions to get to the heart of the fire. Stoke station officer Dereck Nilsen says the Menzshed and a couple of outbuilding were fully involved in fire when they arrived. “At this stage we’re unsure of the cause, but there is extensive damage throughout the property. Other than that we've got everything under control. No one was injured or around at the time, which is a bonus." Rex set up the ‘Menzshed' in June last year as a workshop for retired men in and around

Rex says each piece takes him about a week and a half and he’d been working on the trailer load alone for a good couple of years. Tourists crash on Waimea Road: A family of tourists had an unfortunate start to 2016 after they crashed their rental car into a parked van around 7 pm on New Years Day. The crash was opposite the Nelson College sports field along Waimea Rd and has left both vehicles severely damaged. Sergeant Stu Wright was the first serviceman on the scene and says the van involved was parked and unoccupied. “The RAV4 has just been driving down the road and he’s drifted off to the left and hit the parked van.” The cause of the drift is unclear but the police are investigating.

‘Act of kindness’ as candy canes put on kids' graves The relatives of deceased babies buried at the Marsden Valley Cemetery received a surprise when they visited the graves of their children this Christmas. An anonymous couple has warmed hearts by placing miniature candy canes on each infant grave in the Marsden Valley Cemetery’s baby section for Christmas Day. Shanna Thompson was one of the mothers who visited her child on Boxing Day to find a candy cane on her daughter’s and brother’s graves. “When I was visiting my daughter

there was an elderly couple with a basket full of candy canes up by the small babies, at the time I thought they were visiting, it wasn’t until they left and I went to see my brother’s grave that I saw every grave had a candy cane. “It’s very heartwarming, as a mum who has lost a child and my baby brother,” says Shanna. “I’d love to find out who it was, it’s such a huge act of kindness. I’m sure every mum who has angel babies is touched by this.” While these kind-hearted people

remain anonymous, support for their actions is flooding in on social media, with several mothers wanting to thank the strangers. One mother posted: “Such a lovely thing for someone to do, brought tears to my eyes and made my day to know someone else is looking after and caring for our babies.” While another mother says, “It truly brought tears to my eyes that someone special had thought to do something so kind for all our babies. WATER RATIONING: Water rationing has been lifted around Tasman after heavy rain over the weekend replenished river flows and improved soil moisture levels. SKATEBOARD ART: An exhibition of skateboard art created by students from around Nelson and Tasman will be held at the Richmond Mall from January 11 to 31. BoardArt was first launched in Nelson in 2014 and this summer over 60 students from six colleges have been given the opportunity to make their mark on a blank skateboard. Queens Gardens to host art exhibition Jessie Johnston

Whether you’re an art enthusiast or simply want a day out in sunny Nelson, everyone is welcome to Art Group Nelson’s annual exhibition. Located in the picturesque setting of Queens Gardens, the event has been showcasing the talents of the local art group for over 30 years. Over 50 exhibitors will be present on the day and thanks to the groups varied artistic styles, people can look forward to seeing displays of painting, photography, mosaic, glass work and woodwork. Among those who will be exhibiting this weekend are Sharon and Bernard Carroll, who have been members of the art group since they moved to Nelson 18 months ago. Now retired, Bernard and Sharon say they love creating unique pieces and spending time with the inspirational people that make up Art

Group Nelson. While Sharon is passionate about mosaics, a style she was introduced to just after the Christchurch earthquakes, Bernard uses nature as the inspiration for his mixed media pieces. Both artists are looking forward to the Queens Gardens exhibition this weekend and the chance to talk to the people who are buying their art - taking in their feedback and sharing some of background information behind their pieces. Nelson's Angela Miller could well be considering changing her career from graphic designer to fashion designer, after winning the Richmond Mall Fashion in the Field at the Nelson Harness Racing Club's meeting at Richmond Park on Sunday. Angela won the popular contest ahead of runner-up Ange Leonard and thirdplaced Hannah Korner and 40 other ladies, who added plenty of style and colour to Nelson's biggest race day of the year. And she did it on a modest budget, making her black straw hat and black skirt herself and purchasing her hounds tooth-patterned top from Farmers to create a timeless "vintage look" that impressed all the judges. It was the second time Angela has won the contest after taking the crown in 2014. She also completed a double for the meeting after winning the Best Hat contest on the first day on Friday, again with one of her own creations. "I like to dress up, but I don't to spend heaps of money on it so I make all this it myself," Angela says. Classic bikes come out of sheds and on display Brittany Spencer The Classic and Vintage Motorcycle Show kicked off the year for motorcyclist enthusiasts with 66 bikes out on display, from Triumphs to BSAs and Well bikes. The show is a chance for members to shine their machines and show the public why they love their bikes. Classic and Vintage Motorcycle Club president, Ian Goeten, says the day was absolutely brilliant. “As soon as the doors were open we had people coming in, we had hundreds in the first few hours and a dozen people signed up to the club. “We had about 66 bikes on display, all varying in age, price and value. There were bikes as old as 1910 and worth anything between $150,000 and $10,000.” The second day of the show was a swap meet, in which people could buy, sell or trade motorcycle parts and memorabilia. “Each year, it’s like an Aladdin’s cave for motorbikes,” says Ian. The club run several events and hundreds of rides each year, but Ian says it all boils down to a passion for keeping the classics on the road. The born and bred Nelsonian has lost track of the number of club bikes he’s worked on and can’t remember a time when he wasn’t restoring bikes. “Someone asked me the other day, ‘how many bikes have you had’ and I said, ‘I lost count after thirty’, but my first bike was a Triumph Terrier, I was about 13 and I used to ride it on the road without a licence,” says Murray with a chuckle. “I’ve been fixing bikes all my life, it runs

in the family and it’s really rewarding seeing the end result and watching the owner's face when they see their old banged-up bike looking like new," he says. “Motorbikes, cars, whatever it is - everyone gets hooked on something, it could even be rollerskating - who knows, but you only have to look at the number of people that come through the door to realise how big it is in Nelson, last year we had 12,000 in one day.”

Renovation for Stoke’s Turf Hotel

The iconic Turf Hotel is getting a major overhaul, with diggers ripping down the hotel’s restaurant and parts of its upstairs accommodation. Part-owner Andy Dwyer says the hotel was built in three phases and the final section, built in the 1960s, was deemed a risk in the event of an earthquake. “It was under-strength, so we’ve decided to be pro-active and revamp the area that needed strengthening.” The hotel has two double-storey sections. The part of the hotel on the corner of Main Rd Stoke and Songer St was built in 1907 and passed the earthquake test. The second section next to it was what was added in the 60s and what is coming down. It will be rebuilt as only one storey. Andy says the redevelopment is expected to take around three months and will mean a new restaurant and a cut in its accommodation rooms from nine to six. The sports bar is still open and is serving bar meals. “We’re looking at a new food concept for family dining in the new restaurant now, but everything else is fully operational.”

New support group for mums A new community support group for mothers and young families, which is opening in Richmond next month, is holding a fundraising garage sale and silent auction this Saturday. Ma’s Place has been set up by a group of “passionate people” to provide a safe place for mothers and their young children where they can be supported and connected to community agencies. One of the group’s members Carol Marshall and her husband Paul have purchased a property at 13 Cautley St to provide a headquar-

ters for Ma’s Place where the auction will be held on Saturday. “We’ve been talking to a lot of the other agencies about this and they have identified a need for socialbased support for these young mothers,” Carol says. “We’ve been working on the project for about a year now and Saturday’s garage sale and silent auction will be our first public event.” A trained midwife and mother of three, Carol says Ma’s Place will be a drop-in centre where mother’s can get support and advice on a range of parenting issues. Ma’s

come packs for new babies and a creche to “give mothers a break” - all the services will be free. Ma’s Place will also help new or expectant mothers connect with relevant health services and find accommodation. It will be staffed by volunteers although Carol says they are also in the process of applying for funding to employ a part-time helper. Carol says Ma’s Place has been set up with help from the Richmond Family Support Trust and plans to be officially opened in mid-February. Saturday’s silent auction will in-

clude a “beautiful vintage piano in shabby chic style” which has been tuned for free by Mr Music in Stoke. “I did a shabby chic piano for myself and a lot of people have commented about how good it looks,” Carol says. “So I bought another one on TradeMe and did it for the silent auction.” The garage sale and silent auction will be held at 13 Cautley St on Saturday from 9am. Just a thought... You may appreciate that as a pastor I am privileged to be involved at special moments in people’s lives. Birth, marriage, redundancy, tragedy, illness, dying, death and other events in life too can be times of crisis. Crisis, in the original meaning of that term is a time of upset but also a time of opportunity leading to decisive change. Sometimes this change involves not just actions, but also attitudes. I am reminded of this on occasion when I accompany people on their journey of dying. Antiques show is a treasure trove

Yesterday’s junk was today’s treasure at Saturday’s Nelson Collectables and Antiques Show. People piled through the Nelson Suburban Club doors to peruse and purchase all sorts of antiques and get their family treasures valued. The Nelson Bottles and Collectables Club run the event every two years, but member Judy Pittman says it’s more than just old bottles. Across the 40 displays there was plenty to see, with everything from Victorian mourning clothes, money boxes, vintage signs, coins and police hats. “We do it to show people what our club gets up to and also just to get our collections out, dust them off and let the public see them. There’s always a lot of interest and something rare and unusual will

always come out of the woodwork.” Member and local collector John Heeman brought his extensive coin collection to the show. “I’ve been collecting coins since I was a teen and now I’m 75 and still going. The very first piece in my collection was a copper cigarette lighter from Paris, it had an English coin on one side and a French coin on the other side, and that’s what started me off.” John has everything from coin spoons, coin jewellery, penny farthings and even a cheeky chocolate coin. “Not many people notice, but I’ve got a chocolate coin on display too. My granddaughter gave it to me for my collection so I told her I’d put it in the show, and there it is,” says John with a proud smile. Next year, the club will host even more collectors and visitors at the Trafalgar Centre for the National Bottle and Collectables Show.

Champion triathlete uses local product Nelson-based berry fruit company Sujon is excited about playing a small role in keeping world champion triathlete Javier Gomez Noya on top of the podium. Javier, who won his fifth world championships last year and a silver medal at the 2012 Olympics, has been using Sujon’s blackcurrant products as a sports supplement for the last year. The Spanish athlete was introduced to the product by his New Zealand partner, triathlete Anneke Jenkins, and last month the pair visited Sujon’s headquarters in Tahunanui to meet the team and pick up some more of their products. “Anneke has been using our blackcurrant products for the last three years and she introduced them to Javier a year ago ,” Sujon national sales manager Colin Stuart says. “We can’t say if they made a difference or not but he did have an exceptional year on the ITU circuit.” Colin says he met Anneke and Javier in Tauranga in November and helped arrange their visit to Nelson in 







Rain doesn't halt Boar’s jaw 10km race Port's street races It was a day of drizzle, oil spills and a few slips at Saturday’s Port Nelson Street Races, but that didn’t stop competitors from charging the streets in an effort to become the King of the Port. Ashburton’s Andrew Rudd stayed on his supermoto long enough to take out the King of the Port title. Nelson's Scott Sutherland won the Formula 1 and BEARS classes, Jonny Lewis took out the Formula 3 class and Richmond’s Tobby Tutty claimed first place in the post-classics class. Unfortunately, Motuekaborn motocross legend Josh Coppins had to make an early exit from the competition, getting in only a few laps before his bike blew a hole in the piston. Nelson Road Racing Association president Andy Watson says, because of the wet weather the races became a ‘who can stay on the longest’ event, but he was impressed with all of this year's riders. “Even with

For two or three heart-stopping seconds on Sunday, Nelson horse trainer Ian Thomas thought he might win the biggest race of his life. Ian's horse Taittinger Rose was storming home in the Nelson Pine Industries Nelson Cup at Richmond Park and looked like it might just catch Western Art which had hit the lead in the straight. But the finishing post came too soon with Taittinger Rose and champion driver Dexter Dunn finishing second by a head in the $15,000 feature event. "She was coming home so fast I thought she might get there," Ian says. "When Dexter got to work on her she took off - it was a close thing. "It would have been incredible if she'd won, especially in our own cup, but I'm still thrilled she got second - it's easily my best result as a trainer,â&#x20AC;? he says. Ian, who owns Taittinger Rose with his wife Sue and daughter

Speedway driver wins NZ champs

Nelson Superstock driver Shane Harwood hasn’t had any time to reflect on winning his first New Zealand title as he prepares to head to Rotorua for this weekend’s world champs. Shane won the New Zealand championship at the Stratford Speedway on Sunday evening to secure his first national title in 10 attempts. Now he is busy getting his 1NZ car ready for Rotorua where

he is expecting an even harder weekend of racing. “It’s going to be a step up from Stratford,” Shane says. “I’m going to have to go for it from the start to make sure I qualify because there’s 80 cars and only 20 get through.” However, Shane says winning the national title at the weekend has given him a lot of confidence going into the worlds. He is also relieved his car came

through the weekend relatively unscathed “with only a couple of flat tyres” and only needed fine tuning before travelling north again this week. “I’m driving pretty well at the moment and the car is good so I hope that’s going to help in Rotorua,” Shane says. Shane is the first Nelson driver to win a New Zealand Superstock title since Dale Ewers won in 2010-11.

Young athletes from Nelson and Richmond will be lacing up their track shoes and putting their training to the test when they compete in the 38th Colgate Games at Saxton Field Athletics Track starting on Friday. The 2016 Colgate Games, New Zealand’s National Junior Athletics Championship for children aged seven to 14, has received more than 2000 entrants with 39 from Athletics Nelson and 67 from Athletics Richmond.
